It’s Saturday, so it’s market day! I’m so excited about some of the goodies I picked up at the market this morning. It’s going to be a tasty week.
This week I swung by a new (to me) market here in Fort Worth. I’ve been going to the same one since I first moved to the DFW area, but have moved twice since then. That one is no longer all that convenient. It was high time to check out one that’s closer to home, so I loaded up the littles and we headed out to the Clearfork Farmers Market. This turned out to be a great choice.
I grabbed some late summer produce, most notably some gorgeous okra and a huge watermelon from Demases Farm. I also got some beautiful red sweet peppers from Arison Farm. The watermelon unfortunately met with a small disaster while being unloaded after we got home, but the portion that did not get sacrificed to the driveway got sliced up to go with breakfast, and it was fabulous.
I also scored a bunch of greens, including two types of lettuce and a bunch of arugula. I picked up some chevre as well, and have a feeling it’s going to end up in a bowl with some of that arugula and one of the roasted beets that have been hiding on the top shelf of my fridge for the last few days.
And then there’s this sausage from The Salty Pig Sausage Company. I can’t tell you how excited I am to try this sausage. Besides the fact that I find the name highly amusing, the ingredients list leaves my spicy food loving heart all a-flutter. I already promised a couple of my fellow spice aficionados that I’d do something with this in the next few days. We’re all very eager to try it.
Do you live nowhere near here, but want to see what local farms have on offer in your area? Not everywhere has a farmers market, but you might be surprised how many places do. You can find a reasonably comprehensive, and easily searchable list at LocalHarvest.org.
